LANA BOARD NEWS
January, 2008
Your LANA Board of Directors have been very busy over the last several months. Our “LANA Fiesta” EXPO, ALSA Show and PLTA Pack Trial" will be held this year in Fallon, Nevada from June 18th through the 22nd; it all begins on Wednesday, the 18th with the PLTA Pack Trial. It will be followed by two full days of educational classes and contests on Thursday and Friday.
The LANA double point ALSA show begins bright and early Saturday morning concluding on Sunday, the 22nd. Pam Trauth, EXPO site chair, has worked hard to secure a site with very reasonable RV, camping and nearby hotel rates along with delicious catered meals. Kathy Nichols, adult program chair, has put together a great group of speakers on a variety of subjects. Tammie Munson, youth program chair, is working hard on challenging as well as fun classes and activities for numerous youth attendees. Jan McArdle, chair of your EXPO fundraising, has some great items this year including a brand new Wii system. It doesn’t stop there… there will be ALSA Walking Fleece and Shorn Fleece classes with ALSA Fleece Judge, Maryan Baker. There is a lot more. Your LANA Board, along side a number of amazing volunteers, are working on everything from T-shirts, decorations and registration packets to educational notebooks, stall arrangements and wool room. Volunteer Margaret Ricci is designing the logo. Volunteers Robin and Nancy Hester and Mike Thompson are putting together the pack trial.
Mark your calendars! This is one EXPO you will definitely want to experience!
The LANA Board face-to face meeting was hosted January 11th and 12th at the home of Dan and Marilyn Milton. As always, the Milton’s were most gracious. They allowed us to complete a jam-packed agenda by keeping us well fed and watered. We cannot thank them enough for their hospitality.
While the board spent nearly one full day working on our upcoming EXPO, a number of other issues were also handled at the face-to-face meeting. Important highlights:
LANA Website
Caroline Gardner has agreed to be the LANA web site person. She has put together an updated site with a new look. Among many things, it will include a storefront that will allow LANA members to sell their camelid related items to the public. Thanks so much to Linda Solomon for her long-standing work on our web site. You are so appreciated!
LANA CO-OP – LANA Llama and Alpaca Store
Maryan Baker is spearheading the work in putting together the storefront for the LANA web site. The purpose is to promote and educate the public about llamas and alpacas providing another avenue for camelid related items. Consignors must be LANA members. Anyone may purchase items.
An advertising committee was put together not only to solicit advertising but also to promote LANA in other periodicals.
Dan Mora, DVM will replace Rob Pollard, DVM as our LANA representative to the LMRG. Dan will advise the board regarding proposed research projects at the Morris Animal Foundation. All information and funding of Morris research projects will be handled through the LANA office. Thanks, Rob, for your guidance. We appreciate your wisdom!
For personal reasons and family difficulties, the LANA board reluctantly said goodbye to two board members in the last several months – Diane Sanders and Les Flynn. At times, a volunteer board position can take a great deal of time. The entire membership thanks you and appreciates your service on the board.
The Youth Across America program was discussed. Tammie is working with Nancy Redden to update the program and get the information out to youth as soon as is possible. Scholarships will be given this year.
The board established procedures on how best to handle email business and voting.
LANA Award winners were discussed and recipients chosen. Plaques in appreciation were discussed, established and recipients chosen.
Discussion was had on the possibility of a Midwest LANA EXPO. There is great potential for hosting an educational program and play day in the Midwest. Jan will work on the details and present a proposal to the board. The board hammered out a budget and reviewed the strategic plan.
Applications for the Hand in Hand program were reviewed. Dr. Dale Magnaussen in Wisconsin and Dr. Roberta Zajak in California are the 2008 recipients.
The board had a conference call meeting on February 7th to follow up on board assignments and EXPO details. LANA EXPO takes months of planning and work. The next scheduled board call is on February 21st.
Thanks to all of you who have joined LANA for the first time and thanks to all of you who have renewed your membership. If you have not renewed for 2008, please take a pause from what you are doing right now and send in your membership. Any organization is only as good as it’s membership. Belief in the possibility of “change” is currently sweeping the country. It is awakening the voices of those who have long felt they did not matter. You do matter… to the benefit of the country, your neighborhood, to your family and animals . . . and to the organizations you support.
LANA is your organization and collectively, we can surely make things happen. And, thanks to all of you who are stepping forward, we are!
Wishing you all the very best,
Cathy
LANA President
